Curiosity has always been there. Maps, custom cricket tournaments, stars, made-up planets, and what not. With time it found specific tools: crude poetry first, and later programming, which became the more commanding one.
Ironically, for someone known in software circles, technology has never been the interest. The format of stories has been the driver. Technology is how the stories get told.
The failures that didn't hurt, and the one that did
There have been plenty of failures along the way. They were never demotivating; the curiosity always won. The bigger failure was a different one: not setting up a life around this story-making interest, especially as a career. A job that pays well but demands moderation sits badly with a temperament that wants to explore one domain deeply and then script its stories.
Learning about Bret Victor's work was a welcome turn. It showed that the space between imagination and software could be made smaller, and that people were working on it seriously.
Portray the work
The realistic answer, written down in early 2023, was a personal brand built around the stories: projects, essays and a short bio, a place to portray the work and the skill behind it, and to meet people through it. A personal website is the obvious first step. The note was clear about one more thing: keep it small, and do not overburden the work that matters most.
This site is that note, finally acted on.
